In the first week of May we have been at RailsConf 2009 in Las Vegas and on Sunday before the conference we made a trip to the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon Skywalk (the page currently raises a malware warning, so following the link is at your own risk!). The pictures of this trip can be found in my Flickr account or below:

We also blogged about the conference (in German) over at our joint blog Komprovisation.

Top 3 of Free Music 2008 http://thomas.dohmke.de/items/view/589/top-3-of-free-music-2008

Similar to 2006, I've created my personal top 3 of free music 2008 based on the play count in iTunes:

Pluramon - Border Blackmail - False Medication Cat Power - Metal Heart

Number 1 of the complete list including non-free music is another song from Blackmail, The Good Part, which you can listen to on Blackmail's MySpace page...

Yeah, it's still itching as always When you're missing the good day Come and fill up the good part

Photos from India http://thomas.dohmke.de/items/view/3/photos-from-india

In August, we stayed 3 weeks in India and as usual we made lots and lots of photos. A small number of them can be found at my Flickr account or directly in the following viewer:

MATLAB Blog http://thomas.dohmke.de/items/view/212/matlab-blog

Although MATLAB is one of the most used tools for numerical computing, signal processing or modelling, only a few German resources can be found in the World Wide Web. So I decided to start a German blog about MATLAB, called mllog. It will also focus on Simulink and Model-Based Development as well as my own open source tools like mlUnit, mlProj, slUnit.

Photos from Australia http://thomas.dohmke.de/items/view/15/photos-from-australia

In November, we stayed 4 weeks in Australia and visited Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Canberra, Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road, Kangaroo Island, the Flinders Ranges National Park, Adelaide, and, finally, Perth. Overall, we made more than 3,000 photos, a small number of them can be found at my Flickr account, or directly here by using this incredible flash-based picture browser.

Test-Driven Development of a PID Controller http://thomas.dohmke.de/items/view/20/test-driven-development-of-a-pid-controller

The current issue of IEEE Software, whose topic is Test-Driven Development (TDD), includes an article from Henrik Gollee and me about the Test-Driven Development of a PID Controller. In it, we apply TDD to the control system design of a PID controller for a simplified vehicle system using slUnit and Simulink. slUnit is a unit testing framework, which combines the features of the xUnit testing frameworks and the Simulink graphical programming language.

You've got to find what you love http://thomas.dohmke.de/items/view/21/youve-got-to-find-what-you-love

In 2005, Steve Jobs gave a speech at Standford to the Class of 2005. This morning, I stumbled about this quote which I had saved some months ago: You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle. Great, isn't it? There is also a German translation of the speech.

Photos from Ecuador http://thomas.dohmke.de/items/view/22/photos-from-ecuador

Today, I finally managed to sort my photos from Ecuador and upload them to Flickr. The photos are published under the Creative Commons License Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0, so feel free to share (copy, distribute, display, and perform the work) or remix (make derivative works) them. Here are some of my favorites:

The Wayback Machine has an archive of thomas.dohmke.de reaching back till 2001. Funny to see how my homepage looked 6 years ago...

2001 2002 2003 2004 2005

Unfortunately, the 2006 version of this blog is missing, but at least you can read all old articles in the blog's archive (with the new design).

Top 5 of free music 2006 http://thomas.dohmke.de/items/view/24/top-5-of-free-music-2006

Based on the play count of iTunes I've created my own top 5 of free music 2006: Chikinki - Like It Or Leave It (110) Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor (80) We Are Scientists - Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt (48)Blackmail - Moonpigs (47)Downpilot - True (39)Actually, Franz Kasper with What Am I Doing Here would stay in 3rd place with a play count of 68, but the song isn't available for free download anymore, so it was disqualified (by my own rules). :)

Moved to new Blogger http://thomas.dohmke.de/items/view/25/moved-to-new-blogger

Last night I moved my blog from the old version of Blogger to the new version of Blogger. With it, it is now possible to label all entries. So this entry has got the labels "blog" and "english", as it is about my blog and is written in English. Maybe in future I will write some German entries as well... ;)
